Recycling construction waste: recovering valuable materials

An enormous amount of construction waste and excavated soil is produced every year. These volumes represent a huge potential of resources. With the corresponding know-how in processing technology and construction waste recycling, valuable resources can be recovered. At the same time, increasingly scarce and expensive disposal capacities are avoided. We offer solutions for:

  • C&D waste and excavated soil processing: recovery and recycling of concrete, bricks, stones, metals and gypsum
  • Excavated soil: removal of contaminants such as asphalt, ceramics, glass and organic materials
  • Railway ballast recycling: processing for reuse by removing the round grain

Our solutions include crushing, dry and wet processing, screening and sensor-based sorting. This allows recyclable materials to be recovered, impurities to be removed and standard-compliant sand and aggregates to be produced.

C&D waste recycling: step by step

Construction waste and excavated soil materials have great potential for recycling. The quality of the recyclates plays a major role here. Binder+Co supplies solutions for every process step:

1. Crushing

The first step in the processing of demolition waste is crushing. The reliable crushers from COMEC-Binder reduce the demolition material to the desired grain size.

2. Screening

The second step is to separate the construction waste material according to grain size. Our BIVITEC flip-flow screens are
suitable for this application, as they use flexible screen mats to classify even difficult-to-screen materials reliably and without clogging. For coarser fractions, circular vibrating screens are used to ensure efficient pre-separation. Dewatering screens separate water from solids and can also be used as washing screens to optimally prepare the raw material for optical sorting.

3. Removal of impurities

The removal of impurities at the start of the treatment process is also of great importance. Steel and reinforcing steel are removed with overbelt magnets, non-ferrous metals with eddy current separators. Light organics, plastics and light materials are removed via the BREEZER using an air stream.

4. Wet processing

In wet processing, sticky components such as loam, friable material and clay are dissolved and dust and fines are removed - the ideal preparation for sensor-based sorting. Grains up to 300 mm in size are cleaned in the COMEC-Binder washing drum.  Log washers  ensure even more intensive cleaning.
Light materials and organic components are removed by a jigging machine .

5. Sensorbased Sorting

Our Clarity sorting machines offer comprehensive solutions for sorting construction waste, excavated soil and dismantled railroad gravel
into pure products. At the heart of the sorting process is material detection, supported by various sensor technologies in different wavelength ranges, such as visible light (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), inductive metal detectors and artificial intelligence.

6. Sand processing

The sand preparation machines from Binder+Co enable the production of standard-compliant sand. Customized sand products can be produced with the compact hydrocyclone systems from COMEC-Binder. With the SANDEXX sand trap and the screw classifier, Binder+Co also offers maintenance-friendly and energy-efficient solutions for grit processing.

7. Process water treatment and sludge dewatering

Our water treatment systems reliably recycle all process water and save up to 85 % of the fresh water required for a sand and gravel washing plant. The separated sludge (< 63 μm) is dewatered using a chamber filter or belt filter press. The filtrate water recovered in the process is fed back into the washing process via the process water treatment system.
